ThredUp resale data: Clean Out vs Direct Listing
Compare ThredUp Clean Out and Direct Listings by condition, pricing source, estimated retail, shipping and payout context.
One storefront, two listing models
ThredUp's current public item pages can represent managed Clean Out inventory or beta Direct Listings. Record the listing mode before comparing price, description, condition evidence, shipping or returns.

| Listing mode | Who creates and prices the listing | What the distinction means |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Out | A seller sends items to ThredUp; ThredUp handles inspection, photography, pricing and listing. | The platform-managed listing may include inspected condition details and measurements. The consignor's eventual payout is separate from the public ask and depends on the sale and current Clean Out rules. |
| Direct Listing (beta) | An individual seller creates the listing in the ThredUp app and sets the item price and estimated-retail comparison. | A seller-written description and seller shipment create different provenance and fulfillment context. ThredUp labels the experience beta and says Direct Listings ship under different terms from its managed listings. |
Field map for a resale item observation
Keep fields from the public item page and seller text distinguishable. ThredUp's examples expose numeric item IDs and may have missing structured measurements even where descriptive text includes dimensions.

| Field group | Values to preserve | Provenance rule |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and mode | Item ID from the page; canonical item URL; Clean Out or Direct Listing label; observation time | The item ID is a source identifier, not a cross-market SKU. Keep the listing mode attached to every observation. |
| Structured product detail | Display title; brand and style; category; size and size note; material/color; condition label; structured measurements if present | Keep selected brand/category/size and condition apart from text. Missing measurements are unknown, not zero. |
| Item narrative | Condition inspection notes where shown; seller-entered item description; disclosed flaw text | Attribute the content to ThredUp's managed listing or to the Direct Listing seller. Do not promote unverified prose into structured facts. |
| Price references | Current item price; sale/discount display; estimated-retail amount and explanatory label; displayed currency | Store item price and estimate separately, along with who set each one. An estimated retail figure is not a realized resale price. |
| Delivery and returns | Shipping price/label when displayed; ship-from region; managed vs seller-shipped; return/Return Protection indicator | Use only public item-page shipping context. Do not capture seller names, exact addresses, account identity, buyer order or payout records. |
Separate ask, estimate, buyer total and seller proceeds
Price meaning changes with the listing mode. The live product page defines estimated retail as a comparable new-condition item, not as proof of that used item's original purchase price or a recent market sale.

| Measure | Clean Out listing | Direct Listing |
|---|---|---|
| Item price | ThredUp sets pricing using past sales, brand and item quality; its current policy says prices may be edited or reduced over time. | The seller chooses the item price. The Direct Listing page says ThredUp does not set or control the listing price. |
| Estimated retail | ThredUp's managed listing uses a team-set reference for a comparable new item, based on market monitoring for brands and styles. | The seller sets both the asking price and estimated-retail comparison; the item page cautions that ThredUp does not guarantee that seller-entered value. |
| Buyer pays | The checkout amount may reflect shipping, discounts and the current offer; keep it separate from the item-page ask. | Current help says the buyer total can include item price, a buyer fee, and shipping unless seller-covered. Do not add the fee to seller revenue. |
| Seller proceeds | The consignor earns a percentage of the final selling price under the chosen Clean Out service and current fee/discount rules. | There is no base seller fee in the reviewed beta policy, but optional seller-covered shipping, promotional discount or Return Protection can reduce final proceeds. |
Fulfillment and return states belong to different workflows
Direct Listing items are sold and shipped by individual sellers, with ThredUp handling the buyer-facing platform and eligible returns. Clean Out items pass through a ThredUp intake and listing workflow. Do not infer either account's transaction state from a product page.

| Workflow | Current published process | Data boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Listing | Seller creates a listing in the app, ships with the ThredUp label within the stated deadline, and receives payout after buyer acceptance; the live FAQ describes automatic acceptance after four days. | These policy steps explain the model. The seller's shipment scan, buyer acceptance, dispute, order and payout are account/transaction records, not public listing observations. |
| Return Protection | A seller may offer buyer return protection; returned items go to ThredUp and optional seller coverage may affect proceeds. | Keep the public eligibility/coverage label separate from the actual order's return event, refund and seller settlement. |
| Clean Out | Seller sends a bag or box; ThredUp processes items and lists accepted pieces. Standard and Premium currently differ in processing and in how unlisted items are handled. | Bag status, accepted/unlisted item decisions, consignor balance, reclaim request and payout live in the seller workflow. Fees, timing, discount caps and windows can change. |
Direct Listing eligibility and access context
ThredUp currently labels Direct Listing beta and lists it as app-only. Its current guidelines require a price of at least $20 and limit the flow to eligible women's apparel/accessories with a selectable matching brand; use the live guide for category and brand exceptions rather than embedding the full exception list.

| Reference | Current source detail | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Listing scope | Up to 30 items listed at a time; $20 minimum; selected brand must match the item label; category and brand restrictions apply. | These are current seller eligibility rules, not a guarantee that a specific item is eligible or currently for sale. |
| robots.txt | Current file lists account, cart/checkout and transaction-path exclusions, bot-specific directives and a sitemap. | Crawler directives do not grant reuse rights; review applicable Terms or obtain permission before reproducing content. |
