Kinokuniya book data: editions, availability & APIs
Understand Kinokuniya book data by ISBN, edition, language, member pricing and dated stock status. Separate US retail listings from licensed library services.
The Kinokuniya storefront covers more than books
This guide focuses on Kinokuniya's renewed United States storefront and keeps it separate from the company's licensed library and institutional purchasing services. The US home page supports search by title, author, ISBN or keyword and groups English books, Japanese books, manga, magazines, stationery, gifts and collectibles. That breadth matters: an ISBN model suits a book edition, not a pen, magazine subscription or character item.

| Storefront evidence | What to record | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| US book search | Search field used: title, author, ISBN or keyword; retain the result URL. | A keyword match is not an edition match. |
| Site language control | The interface selector offers English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. | Interface language is not a book's content language. |
| Book category | English or Japanese books, comics and manga, plus source category where shown. | Do not merge Japanese and translated editions because a series title is shared. |
| Non-book catalog | Merchandise category, item name and selected option when the listing provides one. | Do not invent an ISBN or book-format fields for non-book goods. |
| Service boundary | Retail store, library data service or institutional purchasing portal, as applicable. | The brand name alone does not identify a shared catalog or API. |
Match the selected edition, not only the title
Kinokuniya USA product pages expose bibliographic details for a selected item, including publisher, publication date, ISBN, pages, item type and format. The page URL may itself contain an ISBN-like product key, but keep the displayed ISBN label and product URL as separate source values. A title or series can group editions; it cannot replace the identifier and format of the item being compared.

| Record layer | Useful page fields | Matching rule |
|---|---|---|
| Work or series | Displayed title, subtitle, series and contributors when stated. | Use these to group related editions; do not use them as a unique product key. |
| Edition identifier | Source-labeled ISBN and product URL. | Keep the identifier attached to the exact page and selected format. |
| Edition attributes | Language, volume or collected contents, publication date, publisher, page count and format when displayed. | Do not borrow an attribute from another language, volume or binding. |
| Exclusive or special edition | Store-exclusivity wording and explicitly included cover, bonus or collected-volume details. | Record only what the selected listing states; do not infer exclusivity from a cover image. |
| Non-book item | The source's own product code and category-specific option fields, if provided. | Keep this in a merchandise record instead of forcing it into a book schema. |
Keep the KPC member price distinct from the regular price
Kinokuniya USA displays a regular USD amount and, on eligible listings, a separate Member Price for Kinokuniya Privilege Card (KPC) members. Treat these as different offer labels. A member-only price is not the universal selling price, and one displayed amount should never be detached from its market, selected edition and observation time.

| Offer evidence | Retain | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Regular price | Displayed amount, currency, selected product URL and observation timestamp. | A later page or another edition may show a different amount. |
| KPC Member Price | Exact label, displayed amount, stated membership eligibility and timestamp. | Eligibility changes who can use the offer; keep it separate from the regular price. |
| Market and item | United States storefront, selected edition/variant and any visible product option. | Do not combine offers across regional storefronts or variants. |
| Comparison history | Repeated observations using the same fields and a consistent time basis. | Price history needs dated observations, not a single undated snapshot. |
Availability needs its language, location and source date
Current US product pages place a changeable availability label beside the selected item. A separate online-store help article dated October 16, 2020 gives older, more detailed fulfillment labels and distinguishes Japanese-book from English-book flows. Keep that date visible and do not reuse the article’s old delivery estimates as current promises.

| Evidence | Source-specific distinction | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Current product page | Availability appears beside a selected listing and may change over time. | Store the exact wording with the selected page and observation date; it is not a general catalog status. |
| 2020 Japanese-book help | Separates Japan fulfillment-center stock, US warehouse stock, supplier ordering/out-of-stock, preorder and unavailable states. | Retain the Japanese-book scope and historical help-page date; omit the dated delivery intervals. |
| 2020 English-book help | Separately describes US warehouse stock, supplier ordering/out-of-stock, preorder and unavailable states. | Do not transfer the Japanese-book location sequence or estimates to English titles. |
| In-store pickup guidance (2020) | The help page says stock is checked for the chosen pickup store. | Store location and online fulfillment are different availability contexts. |
A licensed library service is different from retail product data
Kinokuniya describes multiple book-related services for different users. BOOK Data ASP is documented as an ISBN-matched library OPAC integration under a usage license. BookWeb Pro is a gated institutional purchasing and search portal. Neither description establishes an open API for the current US retail storefront or its offers.

| Service | Publicly described purpose | Boundary for catalog work |
|---|---|---|
| BOOK Data ASP | The Japanese service page says ISBNs in a library collection can be matched to the BOOK database and OPAC results can display contents/abstracts, author information and cleared cover images. | The page is dated 2020-06-23 and describes licensed institutional use. It is not documented as an API for US retail prices or offers. |
| BookWeb Pro | The public site describes institutional book search and purchasing features; registration and review precede issued login credentials. | Treat it as a gated procurement/search service, not an unrestricted product feed. |
| US retail storefront | The customer-facing store presents selected products, edition details, prices and changing availability wording. | Keep it as its own market-specific retail evidence source. |
| Identifier workflow | A library ISBN list, a US retail edition and a BookWeb Pro search can serve different jobs. | Do not assume the identifiers or fields are interchangeable across licensed and retail systems. |
Build a traceable Kinokuniya comparison record
A useful record starts by naming the source surface and the job it serves. For edition comparison, match ISBN, language and format; for an offer comparison, add the market and price label; for institutional enrichment, record the license context and OPAC service separately. The workflow below is a proposed data model, not a Kinokuniya export or live result.

| Workflow | Record fields | Decision to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Compare editions in a manga series | Title/series, language, volume, ISBN, publisher, publication date, pages, format and source URL. | Keep Japanese and English editions or collected-volume editions as separate sellable records. |
| Compare US offers over time | Selected edition, USD amount, regular or KPC label, observation date and page URL. | Compare like-for-like editions and keep member eligibility explicit. |
| Enrich a library record | Library ISBN, licensed BOOK Data ASP context, returned bibliographic/enrichment fields and retrieval date. | Do not treat licensed OPAC enrichment as retail price or stock data. |
| Describe availability | Exact status text, language scope, chosen store/fulfillment location if stated, source date and observation time. | Leave unreported fields unknown; do not substitute an old help-page estimate. |
