Heritage Auctions results: lots, sold prices and buyer's premium
Read Heritage catalogs and archived lots; separate sale totals, bids, sold prices and buyer's premiums while preserving auction, grade and provenance context.
Start with the auction number, then identify the lot.
Heritage organizes sales by department and auction, then numbers the individual lots within each sale. Match the auction number before using a lot number: the same number can occur in different auctions. The past-auction schedule is useful for finding the sale and its date or category, while the individual lot archive answers what happened to one item.

| Record level | Useful fields | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Department or category | Collectibles area and sale title as displayed | A department name does not identify a particular sale. |
| Auction | Auction number, title, date or date range, location or format when shown, and sale state | A sale schedule describes the auction, not each lot's bid or result. |
| Lot | Auction number plus lot number, title, and the lot page URL | The lot number is meaningful only with its auction identifier. |
| Sale-level result | Aggregate label such as “Realized from N bidders,” with the sale page and observation date | This is an auction-level figure, not a price realized for an individual lot. |
Current bids, sold prices and sale totals are different states.
A live bid is an observation during a sale; an estimate is guidance; an archived lot result is a later state. Heritage pages may show labels such as “Current Bid,” “Sold For,” “Sold on,” or an amount “w/ Buyer's Premium (BP).” Keep the label, date, currency and displayed basis with the amount. When the record does not say whether an amount includes the premium, mark that basis as unstated instead of calculating one.

| Source label or state | How to record it | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Estimate | The estimate range, currency and lot page where shown | An estimate is not a bid or sale price. |
| Current Bid / high bid | Displayed amount, currency, capture time, remaining time and bid source if present | A current bid is not the final result. |
| Sold For / Sold on | Exact label, amount, currency, sold date, auction number and lot number | Do not assume the amount includes the premium unless that record or its sale terms establishes the basis. |
| w/ Buyer's Premium (BP) | Preserve the separately labeled amount as displayed and link it to the same lot | Do not merge it with the hammer bid or apply a premium twice. |
| Make Offer to Owner | Treat as a separate post-auction offer state when displayed | It is not a sold result or a completed auction bid. |
Lot identity and evidence vary by collecting category.
A numbered lot is not a standard retail SKU. Heritage archives can include descriptions, images and pedigrees, and the useful identity fields depend on the object. Preserve the wording and attribution shown on that lot rather than flattening every department into the same product fields.

| Lot type | Potentially useful fields | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Coins | Denomination, date, mint mark, grading service, grade and certification number where supplied | A certification identifier and grade should remain attached to the named service and lot. |
| Comics | Issue or edition, publisher, grade, grading service and certification identifier where supplied | Do not infer that every comic is professionally graded. |
| Art and decorative objects | Artist or maker attribution, title, medium, dimensions, condition and stated provenance | Keep attribution and provenance linked to the source that states them; do not present a listing as independent authentication. |
| Any lot | Auction and lot identifiers, catalog description, condition notes and image references | Retain source context; do not copy descriptions or images into a separate catalog. |
Bidding formats and buyer costs depend on the sale.
Heritage describes floor, phone, mail and internet bidding, along with online-only sales and Heritage Live. Some categories or sessions use extended bidding. Record the format and closing state stated for that auction; do not treat every lot as following one timer or closing rule.

| Term or state | What Heritage's sources say | How to keep it clear |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer's premium | The auction terms say the premium is added to a successful bid; the applicable rate is published for each auction. | Store the bid and premium separately and check the catalog or online terms for that sale. |
| Third-party bidding platform | The terms describe a separate platform fee for successful bids placed through some third-party platforms. | Keep a platform fee distinct from Heritage's buyer's premium; do not carry a fee rate between sales. |
| Auction format | Formats include floor, phone, mail and internet; online-only and session-specific extended bidding are also described. | Record the named format and any extended-bidding rule for the particular session. |
| Website use | The current Website and Mobile App Use Agreement limits services and content to personal use and prohibits automated collection and commercial republication. | Read the current agreement before collecting or reusing content; a public lot page does not itself grant those rights. |
Keep a historical auction observation auditable.
Auction results become useful for research when the identity, price state and evidence can be traced back to the exact sale. Save an observation date and the source URL alongside each field. A changed page or later offer should not overwrite the record of what the lot showed at an earlier point in time.

| Retain | Why it matters | Example field |
|---|---|---|
| Auction number, lot number and source URL | The paired identifiers locate a specific item in a specific sale. | Auction # and Lot # |
| Exact amount label, amount, currency and stated basis | Readers can distinguish an estimate, bid, premium-inclusive amount and archived result. | Current Bid or Sold For |
| Sale or observation date, bid source and sale state | A dated record makes live and completed states comparable without mixing them. | Sold on date or capture time |
| Grade, certificate, attribution and provenance with their named source | Evidence remains traceable and is not promoted into an unsupported authenticity claim. | Grading service and certificate ID |
| Retrieval date and any unresolved field | Readers can see when the source was checked and what the page did not specify. | Premium basis unstated |
