Artsy artwork data: editions, prices and attribution
Artsy artwork and edition guide: keep seller attribution, Art Genome categories, asking prices, auction bids and estimates distinct; check current access terms.
An artwork, edition and Artsy listing represent different things.
Artsy is a marketplace where independent galleries and other sellers offer artworks for inquiry, online purchase or auction. Keep the artist, artwork or edition, sales listing and seller as separate related records. A listing description is seller-attributed information, not independent authentication.

| Record | What it represents | Keep distinct |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | A named artist, collaboration or collective associated with the work | Preserve the source attribution and avoid treating a name match as a unique work identifier. |
| Artwork or work | The creative work or series described by the source | Keep the artwork record separate from each current or past sales listing. |
| Edition | A stated edition or copy related to a work, when the source identifies one | Retain displayed edition wording and number separately; missing edition details do not establish that a work is unique. |
| Listing or offer | A seller's inquiry, purchase, offer or auction record for a work or edition | Store its own availability state, price basis and observation date. |
| Seller or gallery | The party offering the item; Artsy's Conditions of Sale assigns sellers responsibility for their listing descriptions | Keep seller attribution separate from Artsy and from the artist. |
Art attributes need attribution and precise dimensions.
Art records combine descriptive claims and relationships that do not all describe the same thing. Preserve each value with its source wording, unit and relation to the artwork, edition or seller statement. Artsy's Conditions of Sale disclaims warranties for multiple artwork attributes, so a listing is not proof of condition, attribution or authenticity.

| Field group | Record at this level | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and date | Artist attribution, artwork title and stated creation date or period | Keep the source's wording and qualifiers; do not infer a precise year from a broad period. |
| Medium and materials | Displayed category or medium, plus fuller material description when separately stated | A medium label and a materials statement can differ in detail; retain both rather than merging them. |
| Size | Dimensions, units and whether they describe the artwork, frame, component or grouped set | For a pair or set, distinguish each component from the combined measurement. Do not compare framed size with unframed size as if equivalent. |
| Edition and markings | Unique or edition wording, edition number and size, signature or inscription when stated | These are source fields, not independent evidence that the work is authentic. |
| Condition and documentation | Seller-stated condition, certificates or other documentation mentioned in the listing | Attribute each statement to its source; do not present it as inspection or verification. |
| Art history relationships | Provenance, exhibitions and bibliography as separate relationships | A provenance record, exhibition mention and published reference serve different purposes; keep their links and dates separate. |
The Art Genome Project is Artsy's discovery vocabulary.
Artsy describes the Art Genome Project as its classification system and technological framework. Its public category page connects artists, artworks, architecture and design objects through multiple characteristics. Treat those labels as Artsy classifications attached to a particular entity, not as a universal art-history standard or a substitute for the work's own description.

| Category dimension | What a label can describe | Useful handling |
|---|---|---|
| Subject or discipline | What an artwork depicts or an artistic discipline such as art, architecture or design | Keep the category label tied to the artwork or artist to which Artsy applies it. |
| Movement or period | A style, movement or time-period association | Preserve the displayed term; do not collapse overlapping terms into a single genre. |
| Medium, material or technique | How a work is made, what it is made from or a format used | Keep these taxonomy labels separate from the listing's medium and materials fields. |
| Visual quality or geography | A formal quality or geographic association used for discovery | Retain multiple characteristics when present and their source context; do not infer a place of origin. |
| Entity relationship | A characteristic applied to an artist, artwork, architecture or design object | Do not move an artist-level category onto every work without source evidence. |
Separate asking price, current bid, estimate and result.
Artsy's current price guidance distinguishes the seller's displayed asking price from an auction's current bid. Contact-for-price and on-hold listings may require an inquiry; sold, bidding-closed or unlabelled works are generally unavailable and their prices are usually not shown. An estimate is not a completed sale or a valuation, and buyer premiums, shipping, taxes and other charges can change the amount paid.

| Price concept | Meaning | Record separately |
|---|---|---|
| Asking price | A price displayed for an online purchase or offer | Displayed amount, currency, seller/listing and observation time. |
| Current bid | The bid shown while an auction is active | Bid amount, currency, auction state and observation time; it is not the final result. |
| Presale estimate | An estimate associated with an auction lot | Low/high estimate and currency when given; do not use it as a forecast or realized price. |
| Sale result | A completed result only when the source reports it | Keep sold or bidding-closed status distinct from a numeric price; an absent result is unknown, not zero. |
| Additional charges | Buyer premium, shipping, taxes or other transaction costs where applicable | Keep charges separate from the displayed asking price, bid or estimate. |
Check Artsy's access and content-use terms before reuse.
For someone searching for an Artsy scraper, the current official terms are the key boundary: section 2.15 says access must use Artsy's interface and instructions and lists scraping, crawlers, data mining and AI or machine-learning tools among restricted conduct. Sections 2.16 and 2.18 restrict content use and commercialization without the stated permissions. This guide explains data distinctions; it does not grant access or reuse rights and is not legal advice.

| Official source | What it states | Page boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Terms of Use, section 2.15 | Access through Artsy's interface and instructions; restrictions list scraping, crawlers, data mining and AI or machine-learning tools. | Do not treat public visibility or this guide as authorization to collect. |
| Terms of Use, sections 2.16 and 2.18 | Content use and reproduction are restricted except as permitted; commercializing Services, Content, information or data requires prior express permission from Artsy or the relevant rights holder. | Check the current terms and rights for the intended use; this page does not make a legal determination. |
| Public API documentation | The developer portal says retirement is in progress and the public API, documentation and playground may be removed without notice; it says partner API integrations are unaffected. | Record the notice date and keep partner API status separate from public API documentation status. |
