Instagram Shopping product data: tags, catalogs & variants
Understand Instagram Shopping tags, catalog items, selected variants and seller checkout; distinguish authenticated business APIs from public product access.
A shopping tag links social content to a merchant catalog item.
Instagram Shopping is a product-discovery surface on Instagram. A product tag connects a post or story to an eligible item in a merchant's Meta catalog and can lead to the merchant's product destination. Keep the social content, tag, catalog item, selected option and destination as related but separate records; a post's publication time does not date the product's current offer.

| Record | Useful fields when visible | Keep it separate from |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram account | Professional account name or ID and the merchant relationship when known | The product brand or merchant catalog identity. |
| Post or story | Permalink, format, publish time and the visible product-tag relationship | The catalog item's last-updated time or current price. |
| Product tag | The tagged item reference and the selected product option when exposed | A standalone inventory record or proof of current stock. |
| Catalog item | Merchant/catalog context, item identifier, title, brand and source product URL | The social post's caption or comments. |
| Merchant destination | Product URL, market, currency and checkout destination as displayed | An assumption that every Instagram Shop uses the same checkout flow. |
Catalog fields depend on the merchant feed and selected variant.
Meta catalogs are supplied and managed by businesses and their commerce integrations. Keep an identifier's source and catalog context with it: a merchant SKU or GTIN is useful only when the feed provides it, and a product title alone may not distinguish a size, color or other variant. Shopify's integration specifically requires the merchant to select a variant when tagging a product that has multiple variants.

| Catalog or tag field | Possible source value | Matching guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog context | Business/account and catalog identity; catalog item reference when available | Catalog IDs belong to the business/catalog context; do not treat them as a global retail identifier. |
| Merchant item | Title, brand, category, product URL, image reference and merchant identifier when supplied | Keep the merchant's fields and labels; do not fill missing values from an unrelated post. |
| Product identifier | GTIN, merchant SKU, retailer ID or other feed-provided code | Record the identifier type and exact source; do not assume the fields are interchangeable. |
| Selected variant | Size, color or another option selected for the product tag | Shopify documents variant selection for its integration. Do not assume every Meta integration exposes variants the same way. |
| Channel state | Shopify says a product must be available in both its online store and Meta catalog to be tagged; Facebook and Instagram features share the channel catalog. | This Shopify-specific publishing state is separate from whether the merchant's product page can still be opened. |
Tag details, catalog updates and checkout are different observations.
A social post may remain visible after a merchant changes a catalog listing. Shopify says product changes sync to Facebook and Instagram through its integration, usually within a few minutes, and Shopify directs Instagram Shopping customers to the merchant's Shopify checkout. Keep the value shown at each step with its own market and observation time; do not treat an old post or a tag preview as a current sitewide offer.

| Observation point | Capture | Why the timestamp matters |
|---|---|---|
| Social content | Post/story permalink, publish time and tagged item reference | The publication time describes the post, not a later catalog update. |
| Tag or catalog view | Displayed item name, selected variant, price/currency and availability wording if shown | Product data may change after publication and can be synced on a separate schedule. |
| Merchant product page | Destination URL, market, current page details and check time | This is the merchant's page state at observation time, not a guarantee about all markets. |
| Checkout handoff | Checkout destination and currency/locale when visible | Shopify's seller-site checkout behavior applies to the documented Shopify channel integration; verify other merchants separately. |
| Price history | Catalog item + selected variant + market + currency + observation time | Do not combine different variants or markets into a single price series. |
Meta APIs provide authenticated access to specific account and business objects.
Meta's Instagram API materials describe professional-account workflows, while its Marketing API collection demonstrates access to catalogs owned by a business. These are distinct permissioned surfaces. The available object depends on app setup, token, granted permissions, linked account or Page, and ownership; these materials do not establish a universal public lookup for every Shop or product tag.

| Official interface | Documented scope | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Graph API with Facebook Login | Authenticated management of Instagram Professional accounts, media, comments and insights; the Facebook Login setup links a Page to the Professional account. | Anonymous access to all Instagram accounts, posts, product tags or sellers' product catalogs. |
| Instagram API with Instagram Login | Authenticated tools for professional accounts using the documented Instagram Login permissions. | The current Meta collection says this setup cannot access ads or tagging. |
| Marketing API catalog request | Bearer-token example listing owned_product_catalogs and product sets under a business ID. | Public lookup of any merchant's catalog or all products tagged on Instagram. |
| Business/catalog access | The business and token must be authorized for the objects requested. | A token for one account or business grants access to another merchant's catalog. |
Region, product eligibility and collection terms affect what is visible.
Instagram Shopping tags depend on supported regions, merchant approval and product eligibility; Shopify links to Meta's current support and product-requirement pages rather than defining a permanent country list. The latest readable copy of Meta's Automated Data Collection Terms reviewed for this guide is marked effective October 7, 2024; it says automated collection requires separate express written permission and that accepting the terms alone is not that permission. Check the linked official terms for updates before any collection. Account and catalog API permissions are a separate access model and do not grant blanket collection or reuse permission.

| Boundary | What the reviewed evidence says | How to represent it |
|---|---|---|
| Feature availability | Shopify's current guide links supported-country and Meta product-eligibility requirements. | Do not assume every account, market or product can be tagged. |
| Meta automated collection | The readable copy is dated October 7, 2024; it calls for separate express written permission and says accepting the terms alone does not provide it. | This is a dated source statement, not legal advice or a permission assessment. |
| API authorization | Professional-account and business-catalog APIs use apps, tokens, permissions and object scope. | API authorization is specific to an account/business workflow and is not a blanket collection or reuse permission. |
